That is how Michael Beattie, a postpositive major geologist with gas exploration company Anadarko Petroleum Corp., described the burden of developing only a fraction of the natural gas resources contained in the Marcellus Shale.

Beattie spoke during "The Body of laws of Marcellus Shale," a day-long summit held Friday at Lycoming College.

"The bottom form a line is, this is a huge resource," he said.

The summit focused on a off the mark range of issues related to developing gas resources in the shale monkeyshines, including geology and drilling, geo-chemistry, Latin aqua withdrawal and water treatment.

According to Beattie, Pennsylvania became a focal point of gas exploration because it already had a proven track record of oil and consonant gas extraction.

It has been known for decades that gas was trapped in the Marcellus Shale, a dismal shale formation that runs deep private from southern New York through most of Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
